How can such a small being produce so much VOLUME???? Hercules is not even 2 years old yet and she has one volume—LOUD! And, thanks to her older sister, she has learned to ask “why” about 400,000 times an hour. Very loudly. About everything. And there is no answer that will suffice.
Oh, and her other favorite word: “now!” Where a “please” would seem appropriate, she uses “NOW!” Nothing like your 2 year old yelling “Mom! Drink! NOW!” at you. Makes me so proud.[/sarcasm] Ugh. We’re working on it.
And, of course, there’s the ever-popular “no” and “me do it’!” that’s so common among cuties this life-stage. I love the inquisitiveness of children and I don’t want to squelch it. But gracious, sometimes mommy needs a break! The other night, I had BB answer Hercules’s incessant ‘why’ questions in the car. BB was laughing and trying so hard to give her a good enough answer. She finally ended with “because Mommy said so.” Yup, even my 4.5 year old knows that sometimes, that’s just why.
I’ve learned through experience that when I see something I don’t like in my children’s behavior, it’s usually because it’s being modeled to them. And since we spend pretty much every hour of the day together, I’m usually doing the modeling. Great. Bad mommy. So, apparently, my voice carries and I say “now” a lot. Well, I’ll be honest, it’s pretty hard to parent an energetic 4.5 year old and a VERY energetic almost 2 year old from the couch. But it’s, unfortunately, where I spend a significant amount of time these days. And it makes me so sad. This pregnancy has been HARD. And we’re just making the best of it. Lots of book-reading and movie watching. And Daddy is awesome and helps to burn their energy anytime he can. He’s the best! No stroller for us… they need to RUN!
We’re trying to all talk in whisper to counterbalance the volume level. Me, trying to model it, of course. It sort-of works. And we’re emphasizing the ‘please,’ ‘yes,’ and kind words. I may dig out my earplugs.
